Chanpen Thai Cuisine - A Review by Maritza López

When you think of South Phoenix, you don’t typically think of Thai food but Chanpen Thai Cuisine on 27th Street and Baseline Road is changing that.

Since coming on board as a Community Correspondent for the South Mountain Villager, I have been excited for the opportunity to spotlight local businesses in the South Mountain Village/Laveen area. As I began my search for my first restaurant review, Chanpen Thai Cuisine caught my eye. The restaurant’s Yelp page displays a 4.5 star rating and countless positive reviews. . In 2013, Chanpen Thai received the Best Thai food award from the New Times Best of Phoenix Awards, nominated and voted by readers. I had to try it.

Chef and owner Chanpen Ramonaitis, a native of Prachin Buri, Thailand, relocated from Glendale to the South Phoenix location in 2012. Chanpen Thai has reached so much popularity in the last three years; plans for a second, larger location at 48th Street and Baseline are already in the works.

Popular dishes include Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles, Red Curry and Garlic Stir fry. Entrée portions are large and reasonably priced around $8 - $13 per dish. Customers can customize their level of spicy for each dish by specifying which level they prefer, 1 – 5. For those who do not enjoy spicy foods, Chanpen’s menu offers several delicious stir fry dishes that don’t lack in flavor.

One popular dish that must be mentioned is the Spicy Lemongrass soup, brought out in a tin hot pot that is good to the last drop. Chanpen is a dream for vegetarians as almost all of their dishes offer a tofu option. For those that can’t say no to dessert, order the Mango Sticky Rice, warm sweet rice with homemade Green tea ice cream. I highly recommend Chanpen Thai Cuisine.
